Ok, the draw has taken place, dates are being booked, sponsors are ready, tickets are being booked and artists are hungry for blood. The Secret Wars Euro league is going to go off!!

Here are the 4 groups. Each team battles Home and Away, so make sure you support your home team and of course welcome the visitors and show them what your city is all about.

TX v TITLE - TEAM SELECTION FINAL

So..... the Birmingham Squad has now been decided ... and it is TX that goes on to join the other 5 artists in the travelling squad going out to represent themselves and Birmingham in the all new Secret Wars Warriors Competition

Plenty heads came and supported their local artists on a chilly night in Digbeth.. BIG up to all of ya.... again a quality vibe, plenty of opinions flowing about ... and plenty new faces in the crowd too ..... all hype

Title dragged himself from his sick-bed, landed bang on time and got straight to work.... chucking up a character with his signature self-portrait face on a giant Judge Dread style robot body ..

...the ever confident TX went BIG straight up with an instant stab at Title's penchant for drawing his own face.. suggesting Title may be more at home on a sea front doodling characatures..

the night rolled on ... plenty of crowd interaction and banter from our man Keithy "Gun Noises" G ... with his ever present bottle of beer in hand .. >

BIG up Rob Skank yet again from The Bench 504 for his little box of goodies... which Slobz was well keen to get into as u can see..

BIG thanks to our judges... Rick from The Night Times ... and our guest MC "Suspekt" who both voted TX .. agreeing with the crowd .. to make it 3-0 .. TX goin into the BIG BRUM SQUAD

EUROPEAN WARRIORS TEAM SERIES - 2010

SECRET WARS IS RE FORMATTING AND ROLLING INTO 2010 WITH A DIFFERENT KIND OF CHALLENGE

After 3 and a half years of single battle series locally in over 20 countries, we have decided to try something different and potentially more exciting for 2010... Introducing the European Warriors series!

"When we started Secret Wars 3 years ago, it was influenced heavily by various things from the Marvel comic, to Warriors and Fight Club. After experiencing the team battles around the World and seeing the benefits of this compared to the singles battles, we decided on trying it as a complete 6-8 month series!"

"I have noticed the crowds are more vocal and patriotic towards team battles - there seems to be more at stake and I love watching the artists free-styling alongside each other.... You never know what will come out the other end!" Terry Guy (Founder of Monorex and Secret Wars)

The rules are the same but the structure of the competition and dynamics of the battle are slightly different - see below for details.

How the competition will work & when

There will be 8-10 teams/cities involved in next years competition, and each city will select 6 artists to part of a squad. Each team will select 2-3 wildcard entries consisting of previous champs and general bad boys! The remaining members will be picked at the local qualifiers.

City selection events - November / December 09 (Check Secret Wars website for dates)

Each city will call out and actively invite people down to jam and show off their skills
Draw will take place to decide what team is which group (A or B)

1st Round - Group league qualifiers

Two groups of 4-5 teams with the top two teams qualifying
Rather than a knockout cup comp, we have decided to make this a little more interesting and maybe fairer - Each game will be a league match with each judge vote and crowd vote worth a point!
Each team will play home and away against the others in their group

Semi finals

With the top two teams going through from each group, we will be left with 4 teams.

The winner of GROUP A will play the 2nd place of GROUP B and the winner of GROUP B will play the runners up of GROUP A.

GROUP A WINNER vs. GROUP B RUNNER UP

GROUP B WINNER vs. GROUP A RUNNER UP

These will also be home and away ties - with the winning team decided on total points earned over the two games. If the points are level than it will be decided by the team who gets the most away points.

GRAND FINAL

This will be hosted at a neutral venue, TBC nearer the time

Quality artwork all round yet again ... these artists definately know what they're doing, and whoever wins the place on the Brum squad will have certainly earned it. Roo stepped up her game massively this round ...

But was out-done by TX ...

Rainbow Street Festival x aug. 1st

Saturday the first of Aug. 09 is a date for the history books, the St. fest was huge, massive in fact. Its monday morning now and i am seriously still in pain. Rave ache at its best this morn.. but boy was it worth it.

With the whole street sectioned off, we (secretwars brum team) found ourselves down the bottom end of the street by the warehouse doors, with Bigger than Barry's giant marquee next door. We had a reet nice and cosy set up though, with one ice cream van to draw on and an ad trailer just in case we needed it. We dj'ed out of the van whilst brum kings Agent, Newso, Posh 1, Roo and Title made it beautiful...
here's some flicks from our keith holland:

We smashed our little rig to bits with Automaton, Slobz and Skeleton + Royal kicking things off playing a variety of different stuff from broken beat glitchy business to straight up and down hip hop killers. It all got pretty Gas Lamp up in there! We were all pretty tipsy by about 11/12 ish and the obvious tomfoolery began with Seeds standing on the roof at one stage waving himself about like a fool as the security boys panikced trying to get him down.

We did plan on having a battle on the trailer about this time but the artists were still well into the van, and the mad 300+ ravers and fans where goin mad for it so we just murk'd on hard scecret wars style.

Jem Atkins then fed the crowd a ton of party hip hop and they loved it.. a quick slot from mr Dan Dna from the GOTAW (gotaw.co.uk) and then, if i remember rightly, Slobz took the helm again for a secondary session before Boogie Dave finished us off with his deadly blend of dubstep pressure. Big up all the dj's who played late against our failing needles! all the artists obviously, you all killed it, big up all the many people involved with the street festival in general, especially Adam Shelton, and most of all the crowds!! we love you all.

We unfortunately didn't get shots of the fully finished van as of yet, due to the fact is was such chaos at the end of the night we simply couldn't get them. However we will get some this week..so keep checking back!

Birmingham v Southampton - full report

Hi wars fans
Its all been happening in middle earth of late as last weekend saw the first of hopefully a 3 series between Brumtown and Sarrrfhampton. The first round being held at the new Brum venue "The Garden" (down the road a little and run the same fam as our usual venue the Rainbow Pub) It was a scorcher of a day and we were knackered from emulsioning the giant new white panel. But excited as we knew the very same panel would be beautiful 12 hrs later with the help of the two, 3 man teams. Namely..

Southampton - Rem1 / Pykee / Dirty30
Birmingham - Phill Blake / Newso / Ouch

We rolled out the red carpet and got the Eddings out (nice 1 Andy G)

With 2 champs on our side we were feeling pretty confident, but as we kicked off the battle i must admit us Brummies were a little worried as Rem and 30 started putting up nasty looking, big characters really fast.. However our boys soon caught up and Ouch began a crazy landscape for the whole Brum end of the panel, with a sick gallion at the far end, it was on.

Slobodan and Skeleton supplied us with a silky selection of beats and breaks as ink spilled.. big respect goes out to our Skelly who ran about in the day smacking up A0 posters in the sun, then still came and totally rinsed out the place. The giant 3 on 3 panel continued to grow as about 6 photographers flashed away (where's ya photo's then people!? big up Witts and Keef - Seeds)

The panel got sicker and sicker and as the battle drew to a close it obviously didn't matter who was gonna win.. the panel is a journey and a half. And can still be seen at the "Garden" in Digbeth at the moment if you fancy a look. Everyone had a great time as standard and all the artists were chuffed with the overal piece, big up ya selfs boys! (+ girl!)
But in the end Brumtown took it 3 nil to win the first stage. Bad luck Southampton! We'll be down to see you guys soon. Tons of thanks..

In brum we know how to do hype. we like hype. secret wars is hype hype hype. so the week before the final we got our man that can mr tony cryze to rock this up opposite the venue..

BIG tings.

So the day arrived, and a historic day it was to be. With an ad trailer 3 panels wide in the centre of the main room and tiered staging around it, we had our arena looking good. we also had all our previous round videos playing on a projector nearby.. all was set. chu, newso, kungfo, zoot, n4 and even philth himslef did some painting on the outside walls of the venue earlier on in the day as we set up. some relly nice stuff too. will slot some pics in here asap

With a general buzz about the place, we were ready to make history once again in brumtown. crew rolled up right on time as the doors opened at 10pm. with a great atmosphere developing the various residents kept the beats and ryhmes flowing and people got a spot in anticipation of what was to be a killer battle. a seemingly nervous sam bevlak and a standardly chilled phill blake were both hungry for the crown . . .

and battle commences at bang on midnight 00:00

Bevlak begins his piece with a spilt ink bottle ...

..which eventually flows into the waves which support Gallion Bevlak; laden with giant edding cannons on a mission to wipe out the Phillth from the streets of Brum.

Phill puts up what seems to be the outlines of a big burner ....

and later adds a sting in his pieces tail with "bevwak" tied to a tree..

skeleton and royal alongside seeds and a superhuman glowing reeps kill sound during the battle..

the crowd, judges, media, bar staff and even security were transfixed as both artists went to work. As the 2 hours passed really quickly, suddenly it was judging time .... rhubarb radio representative Danny gave the first vote to Bevlak..

then World DMC Champion 2008 DJ Switch gave one vote to Phill.

It was all down to the crowd .... and by a few decibels (four i think) Phill took it !

so we have a new king in Brum .... Phill Blake aka Philth takes the crown.. aswell as £1000, a MASSIVE box of EDDING prizes, a MASSIVE box of BENCH504 goodies and the accollade of
BIRMINGHAM SERIES 2 CHAMPION !

semi final 2 sam bevlak the murderer

afternoon all

Second semi final in Birmingham, three words. Big big big.

Series 1 champion Newso, the undefeated fist master faced solo roller Sam Bevlak in what was to be an epic encounter. Sam arrived straight from a night in Brighton, alone.. but ready for action. Newso arriving later with his usual fan club in tow. . The venue soon filled with heads as all the Brum fans knew this one was not to be missed.

As we waited for special guest Reeps1, residents Automaton, Royal + Skeleton held down the courtyard and the live feed to Rhubarbradio.com. The battle started around 11 and both artists immediately went big and bold, Newso began some odd looking character which didn't make sense at first as Bevlak some big letters that read "Newso, schmewso"

no holds barred.

Newso's "beefflap" character came to form to reveal a hideous beast which can't really be described, check this pic:

It was getting pretty dark! And as the judges watched on, an excited crowd were obviously well up for the following crowd vote. We took the judges votes and put them to one side, then in true x factor style we made all crew wait as Reeps hyped everyone up to fever pitch with a ridiculous 10 minute set. He wowed the audience with his new school dubstep business, keep your eye on yout tube and rhubarb for some of that..

Then on to the all important crowd vote. Newso went first with his brum contigent giving it large. But unbelievably Bevlak's vote was wayyyy louder and the decibel reader went flying as Slobz got knocked about the stage by crazed fans (shortly after this photo was taken).

So 1-0 Bevlak, All about the judges..
first up - Bevlak, and 2nd up (not that it mattered) Bevlak again to take it 3 nil.
The solo roller comes in and smashes it, big up!

We all celebrated and commiserated together with a great party till about 4am. As Standard. With musical treats supplied by Adamn Noise, Captain Crunch + Reeps dropping more fire.

A special shout to Trav for coming to film even thought he i still on his crutches, Callum for helping him out too.. Footage soon. semi final 1 - Phillthy Blake takes it by a whisker

Hello All..

It was a sunny saturday in brumtown and our spirits were high knowing that the 2 artists in this semi would both bring some heavyweight pieces. The ever hungry Kungfo, (who lost in the final last series) wanted desperately to win. With his pinned up right hand he pushed on.. using both hands to draw with. Big props out to you Kungfo for battling. No surrender brother!
Phill Blake, also massively hungry to win after losing in the semi's last series. Came out fighting. Both artists went big straight away, putting up big thick lines to begin. A transfixed crowd were immediately sucked in knowing this battle was gonna be a tight one..

The Brum resident dj's hyped up the front and back of the pub as it continued to fill throughout the night. As the crowd grew, the artists were moving really fast and the panels began to look dope. Phill put up 2 amazonian-esque women in his illustrative, tidy style. As Kungfo fought hard with his trademark cats in amongst a forest of lines. Time ticked away but both artists were finished as we approached the last 5 minutes. Both panels were tight. This was gonna be a close call...

With a new decibel reader in effect, the judges wrote their votes down and we rocked the crowd vote. The tightest yet, with Phill taking it by a mere .1 of a decibel. We were glad we'd got that new reader! Phill was 1 nil up. With our first judge revealing Kungfo, it was one all... the room was buzzing now desperate to who was gonna go to the final... the 2nd judge went for Phill and it was written. Kungfo out, Phill goes through. A big congratulation out to you Philth! and bad luck out to Kungfo. You fought well soldier.

And there it is, Phill now awaits to see who he will face in what will be a huge final in the Rainbow Warehouse on April 11th.. stay tuned people!

2ND Q-FINAL CRIZE v NEWSO - BEVLAK v OBENZAH

Wellllllllllll then!
that was very interesting to say the least....

we kinda had a feelin this one would be BIG
and it certainly was.
As the Rainbow shuddered in what felt like the eye of a hurricane, the sw brum family braved the weather to see the series 2 second quarter final go down.

4 hungry artists, everything to play for. The hype was apparent.

NEWSO had a load of giant foam hands with his signature face with eyes on. Fans waved them as others wore tee's with his name on. NEWSO fans were in the building. TONY had his work cut out.. So CRYZE v NEWSO, local graf legend versus reigning champion, both worked the crowd as soon as the battle began. CRYZE donning his NEWSO tee rocked a big CRYZE burner and popped off to the disabled toilets every 10 minutes. NEWSO brought out a Tony The Tiger character holding a perfectly executed take on one of cryzes old characters. CRYZE massacred, begging for mercy. All out votes to NEWSO, well done that man ... will he ever be defeated ????

The other boards had SAM BEVLAK the only outta towner v OBENZAH a straight up member of the SW brum fam.. OBENZAH came real hard, real fast with a giant octopus like character coming from a craking open ground below.

However BEVLAK came out with a true battle piece making out OBENZAH as a wind-up toy... thats what its all about ya gets!? a truly dope secret wars panel. Brilliant letters, perfect characters. A deserved winner!

Shouts to everyone who reached and made this round what it was . We literally can't wait for the semi's, id do 'em tonight if i could..! SO now its all about PHILL BLAKE v KUNGFO and NEWSO v SAM BEVLAK. Only 4 remain.... who will it be?

ello friends and foes..

its a lot

and it went like this.
With Mr Slobodan away on his holidays i was going to be a busy boy on this one.. but of course Keithy G, Didi and various SW brum fam were on point to give me a hand (respect due to all of you who helped!) With the boards all put up and all prepared by 5pm we were set for a big night. Punters began to roll in about 9 and the stage was set. Artists Bevlak, Obenzah and Josh 2pence all appeared in plenty of time, all pretty nervous but well up for it... but where was the big goon???!! The clock ticked along.. more and more punters rolled in. Tension mounted.

By around 10 pm i was beginning to worry about the fact there was no sign of Goonism. But after a few hours of trying to contact him, it was apparent we had a no show on our hands... this has never happened before so i was somewhat confused as to what to do. By half 10 it was decided that Obenzah would go through.. but then at the last minute Brum writer "Zuki" stepped in...

so we had 2 battles. The ever hungry crowd watched on in anticipation. a late start.. in a standardly packed out Rainbow pub began. It was obvious that there was some serious skills at this battle with all 4 of the artists going for it straight away. An intense hour and a half followed with our 4 judges milling about the area making notes... By the time the judging came the crowd were really hyped for the crowd vote. With an unprepared Zuki battling, Obenzah easily took the 1st crowd vote and then subsequently the 2 judges vote to go through.The 2p/Bevlak crowd vote then went down.. and both battlers bizarrely got the same db reading at 103.00 exactly. Then a crowd vote each and we had a tie..

so we did the crowd vote again and Bevlak took it by literally a point on the decibel reader to go through.. soooooooooooooo Obenzah and Sam Bevlak go through to the quarter finals.

Hello wars fans..
apologies for the delay in my getting this blog to you all until now, hectic week!

We knew we were in for a nutty one, but maybe not quite as hectic as it became!
An epic battle and some seriously heavyweight musical treats were on the cards with young Trav taking on veteran Tony Cryze and champ Newso taking on our one and only female contender Lady Rinth. Resident dj's Royal and Skeleton, Jem Atkins and friends were to hold down the back room with the help of Reeps1, Evolucian and Guardians of the Ancient Wisdom...
Whilst in the front of the infamous Ranbow Pub dj's Nuk and Dr Tra, Didi and the Whomanity crew made sure a steady stream of hiphop and dub flowed.. it was gametime once again.

The Rainbow filled quickly with the usual random blend of Brum Secret Wars fans, and the tension began to mount. Jem and friends had 4 turntables set up and Royal and Skelly alongside the Guardians dj Ferndo were feeding the people some lovely beats.. and the battles began.

All the artists immediately went for it with loads of interesting lines and shapes hitting the panels straight away. Tony went straight in with text as his opponent Trav started some kind of bizarre torso as the central part of his piece. In the other Battle, champion Newso kicked off scribbling some kind of huge head on the left hand side of his panel whilst Rinth started some kind of skull chav?! onlookers watched intentaly as our 4 judges circled the area with a watchful eye...

About half way through the battle, The Guardians along with Royal and Skeleton provided some very slick live hip hop with their guitars and vocals.. these guys are next level, watch out for 'em! The battle raged on... the venue was packed and an every hungry crowd watched the artists rock their eddings. A somewhat worse for wear Tony finished first (claiming later he thought we shouted 15 minutes left, when we actually called 50..lol) as Trav added tons of small detail to his panel. Meanwhile Newso depicted one of Rinths characters being strangled and taunted by a sock puppet?! (you have a sick mind Dan) By now Rinth (the only artist who wasn't cheating i might add! as she was the only person to not use a sketch!!! - we are going to tighten up the rules on this people) finished off her skull chav with shady hat and hoodie holding one of newso characters decapitated heads in his hand, the lady gets dark! big props to her for representing the ladies.. girls we want you for series 3! stop Brum becoming an all out boys club, we know you got skills and Rinth proves it can be done, much respect out to ya LR..

I wasn't comparing this one so i watched on as the clock ticked to the end.. Reeps1 the king of the human sound proceeded to kill it for about 10 minutes to a crowd now at fever pitch, This badboy gets better by the minute, seriously.. The crowd vote followed and was so so close on all counts, but Tony Cryze and Newso both took a vote each. Judging followed with the same 2 battlers both winning additional votes to therefore go on to the next round.

These 2 Brum locals will now meet each other the in the second quarter final.

Yes yes secret wars fans and folks
big shouts to everyone who made it down for the Q-bert gig at the rainbow warehouse recently..
Where we did a little bit of a demo out the back, and our resident dj's held it down.
2p, N4t4, Phill Blake and Monk proceeded to nice up some boards we had set up, as many an onlooker appreciated their Edding pen wizardry. It was a night of fun and frolics, and as for Q-bert.. the man must be alien. one word, skills. out of this world..
